Join Dr Toni Hazell and Carmel McCarthy in discussing the current challenges facing HCPs when counselling adolescents on contraception.

The webinar will support learning around the following:

  • Consulting with adolescents in a safe way, taking into account any potential safeguarding issues.
  • Awareness of the principles of Fraser guidelines and how to use these in practice.
  • Awareness of the use of the different contraceptive methods, and when there are adolescent-specific issues which might guide the use of one method or another.
  • Understanding the non-contraceptive benefits of contraception and how these might be relevant to adolescents.

SPEAKERS

Carmel McCarthy
Practice Nurse
Carmel has been Nursing for over thirty years in both the UK and Republic of Ireland. The majority of her career has been spent within Primary Care where she developed a special interest in women’s health. She is the Contraception and Sexual Health Lead Nurse with the University of Nottingham Health Service and is a non-medical prescriber with competencies in coil and implant fitting. After completing the FSRH Diploma she went on to become a Faculty Registered Trainer and founded Macey SRH with the aim of improving access to sexual and reproductive health education. Carmel is a member of the PCWHF Education Committee.
Dr Toni Hazell
GP, appraiser, freelance medical writer and editor
Toni trained at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School and did her VTS at Northwick Park. After qualifying as a GP, she soon developed an interest in sexual and reproductive health, working as a clinical assistant in a genitourinary and HIV clinic. She currently works as a portfolio GP, combining clinical general practice with roles as an appraiser, LMC member and medical writer and editor for the RCGP and on a freelance basis. She enjoys presenting at and chairing conferences in this and other areas and continues to teach GP trainees on sexual and reproductive health and to fit intra-uterine devices and implants at her surgery in Tottenham, North London. When not at work, her two small children keep her busy and in her occasional free time she enjoys running and playing the piano.
